CHIEF MAGISTRATE HELEN UMANA

Helen Isang Umana Esq. is the Acting Director Akwa Ibom Multi-Door Courthouse. She is a graduate of the University of Uyo, Nigeria. She obtained her LL.B (Hons.) in 1996. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in Victoria Island, Lagos in 1998, and obtained her Masters Degree (LLM) from the University of Uyo in 2007. She later proceeded to London Metropolitan University, United Kingdom for her second Masters degree in International Trade, Transport and Maritime Law in 2010.

Helen I. Umana Esq. practiced under the prestigious Law firm of Kehinde Sofola SAN & Co, at Tinubu Square, Lagos. She joined the Akwa Ibom State Judiciary in 2003, serving as a Magistrate where she rose to the rank of a Chief Magistrate, until her recent appointment as the Acting Director of Multi-Door Courthouse, in December 2014.

She has attended ADR trainings, seminars and conferences. She is a Member of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators London, a Certified Mediator with Conflict Management and Leadership Training Institute, Calgary, Canada, a Member of Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators of Nigeria, a Member of Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association, a Member of Nigerian Maritime Association, a Member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Uyo Branch, a Member of Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria, a Member of Christian Lawyers Association, Nigeria (CLASFON), a Member of Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), a Member of Women in Shipping and Trading Association(WISTA)-Nigeria, a Member of Network of Association of Multi-Door Courthouses of Nigeria, a Member of Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators of Nigeria(ICMC), Past Chairperson of ICMC Uyo Branch, and the Chairman ICMC (Uyo Branch), the Coordinator of African Women Leadership Organisation (AWLO) (Akwa Ibom State Chapter) and a Pastor of Power City International, Uyo.

She is passionate about Justice Reforms initiates in Akwa Ibom through ADR, and the promotion of the rights of women and children.

Her hobbies include Reading, Writing, Travelling, and counseling.

Helen I. Umana Esq. is married to Bar. Isang Umana and the marriage is blessed with four children.
