Emeka Jude Phillipe Obegolu is a Legal Practitioner by training and an Arbitrator and Mediator by passion. He is a senior and founding Partner of Greenfield Chambers, he is a graduate of the Faculty of Law Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka where he obtained his LL.B. (Hons), and has since been called to the Nigerian Bar. He holds a Master’s degree in Mineral Law and Policy (LL.M.) from the University of Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom, and a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK). He is currently pursuing his doctorate degree in Arbitration from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.
Mr. Emeka specializes in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) (Arbitration and Mediation), Criminal law and practice, Commercial law practice, Petroleum Law, pre and post-election matters and constitutional law and practice, to mention but a few. He is also a Notary Public of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He became a certified Capital Market Operator with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2006.
He is an expert in Alternative Dispute Resolution, holding Fellowship of a number of professional bodies including the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK). He is an alumnus of the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation and a certified ADR Trainer with a specialization in Negotiation, Mediation, Conciliation, Arbitration and ADR Registry/Secretarial Services.
He is an accredited Neutral of the Uwais Dispute Resolution Centre (formerly Abuja Multi-door Courthouse), the Federal High Court ADR Centre, the Abuja Chamber of Commerce Dispute Resolution Centre, the Edo State Multi-door Courthouse, the Abia State Multi-door Courthouse, the Ogun State Multi-door Courthouse, and the Plateau State Multi-door Courthouse.
He is a highly-experienced Arbitrator and Mediator. He has served as Sole Arbitrator in commercial arbitrations, served as Counsel in engineering-dispute arbitration and supply contract arbitration. He has mediated several complex disputes ranging from labour disputes and commercial disputes to family and communal conflicts.
Emeka has served as an Adjunct Lecturer for the Nigerian Law School and a Resource Person for the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators; in ADR, the Nigerian Bar Association; in Continuing Legal Education, the National Assembly; in ADR and the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria, amongst others, on numerous occasions. He has consulted for the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) and the Pensions Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) in industry-related dispute resolution.
As a major stakeholder in the Alternative Dispute Resolution industry in Nigeria, he served a Co-Chair of the first Stakeholders’ Workshop on Labour Dispute Resolution in May 2019. He has served as an international speaker for the International Bar Association, the Pan African Lawyers Union, the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, and the Deutshche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), the International Bar Association (IBA), the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) and the Nigeria Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN).
He has held a variety of offices such as the Office of the National Publicity Secretary, Nigerian Bar Association, National General Secretary, Nigerian Bar Association, Member of the Nigerian Communications Commission (ADR Panel of Neutrals) from 2006 till date, Vice President (Legal), Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He is also a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (2004 till date).
He is the President of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, the President of the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce Dispute Resolution Centre (ACC-DRC), the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institute of ADR Registrars, and the 2nd Deputy President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). He also sits on the Board of Trustees and Governing Council of the Gemstones Miners and Marketers Association of Nigeria and the Abuja Chamber of Commerce Business and Entrepreneurship Skills Acquisition Centre, respectively.
Emeka served as the Worthy President of Knights of St. John International, 12 Apostles Catholic Church. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Royal Sports Club International, and a member of the IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja. He is happily married with five children.
